PLUM ISLAND
2012 was the beginning of a series of paintings on the theme of “The Natural Beauty of Plum Island”. This was part of an effort to try to preserve this mostly undeveloped, approximately eight hundred acre Island in Long island Sound off of Orient Point, New York. I and Robert Lorenz, a professional photographer, traveled to the Island ten times at various times of year, weather conditions and times of day. This included sunrises, sunsets, and windy storms. This direct experience, Bob’s photographs and my own photographs and sketches, inspired the creation of 35 acrylic paintings and 12 pastel drawings. These were exhibited along with a selection of Bob’s photographs at sites along the CT shore and on Long Island and in the lobby of the animal disease research laboratory on Plum Island. These shows were planned in cooperation with Save The Sound; they were designed to bring more awareness to the public about the importance of the natural environment of Plum Island. This experience opened the door to opportunities for creating artwork for other nonprofit organizations.
