RURAL QUEBEC, 1974-1981

After leaving Georgia, I teamed up with my brother and bought an old farm in rural Quebec. The soil proved to be good for organic gardening and the long winters provided abundant time to do artwork with subjects mostly related to my life on the farm. A special discovery was learning how to carve soapstone (a tradition of the indigenous people of Northern Quebec). Fortunately, there was a local quarry nearby that sold pieces of soapstone good for carving with a beautiful green color and interesting veins. Inherent in this kind of carving, is that the carver reveals the image or form that already exists in the stone. Practicing this medium evolved into leading carving workshops and later teaching this art form in high school art classes.
