EARLY YEARS, 1947-1966

I have been interested in making things with my hands since early childhood. Because of poor health, I had a lot absences from school. Staying home sick provided an opportunity to draw, create things out of shirt cardboard, and make small carvings from bars of soap. This was followed in middle school by lessons and experiences painting scenes and still lives. If someone asked “what do you want to do when you grow up”? My reply was “I want to be an artist”.

Attending a high school with a strong art department, was good preparation for more advanced learning. Both the sculpture teacher and the painting teacher were inspiring and motivating. While a Junior and Senior, it was exciting to visit art museums and galleries in New York City. The variety of styles, boldness of color and innovation of design of the paintings  at the Museum of Modern Art particularly influenced me. Unfortunately,  most of my artwork from my early years is lost, but below are a few saved pieces from these times.
